Pre-schoolers, ponies, prizes and pats

TRUST EQUALS PEACE OF MIND!

Hayley Jane Sullivan (3) poses with her pony, Buckie. The duo came second in the Fancy Dress competition in a fun day at Whitford Pony Club recently. They are dressed as characters from the Disney movie, Toy Story, in keeping with the Disney theme. The event was organised with preschoolers and young primary school kids in mind. For many riders, it was the first time they had taken part in an equestrian competition and they weaved in and out of obstacle courses; played Grandma’s Footsteps; and stood side by side, calling their ponies’ names in the Greedy Pony Carrot Race. The ponies were all different shapes, colours and sizes and had fabulous names: Midnight, Arthur, Amber and Dollyall scored a perfect ten out of ten for cuteness! The riders ranged in age from 2 to 12 years and while they were pint-sized, they still managed giant hugs and pats for the ponies. Judges were made up of senior riders from Whitford Pony Club, who volunteered their time. It was a fun way of getting involved and giving something back to the club whilst gaining some confidence at the same time. The next event at Whitford Pony Club will be a Registration Day in September. Prospective new members will be able to come along and say hello and find out what Pony Club is all about ahead of the new season.

Don’t forget us! That’s the message from re-elected Orere Community & Boating Club chairman Edward Pram. The club held its AGM on July 20. “The last twelve months has seen a lot of properties change hands. Orere Point is slowly starting to change with lots of new people wanting to call Orere Point home,” says Edward. “Places which were used as baches are now being transformed into homes. This will start putting a little more pressure on our council providers when it comes to erosion issues, storm water drainage, kerb and channelling, phone services and broadband... just to mention a few.” • TO PAGE 8

2 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (August 1st 2014)

Show me the money!... THE EDITOR SAYS BY DUNCAN PARDON duncan@pctimes.co.nz

This is the final few days in which to make a submission on the Franklin Local Board Plan 2014. No, please, stop yawning. This stuff is important even if the natural inclination is for eyes to glaze over. Submissions close August 6. You can read the plan and make a submission online at shapeauckland.co.nz. Or call 09 301 0101 and get them to send you a submission form. Based on engagement with the local community, the Franklin Local Board has come up with a plan that has three key objectives. These are: Plan for growth; prioritise public transport needs and improve road safety; develop a “Greenways Plan” to create inter-connected

WHARF FIX: In the July 18 PC Times Franklin

Local Board member Malcolm Bell says consultants are looking at improving the structure of the Maraetai Wharf. In light of the proposed Auckland Council $12,500 lavatory in the Beachlands Library, has he got an approximate fix on costs from the consultants? Why not get hold of the best in the business, Total Marine, and get them to just fix it? DEREK BRANDT Beachlands

paths for walking, cycling and horse riding. The Plan is a vision document so on that basis it is hard to find much to argue with. It’s full of warm fuzzies and short on specifics. But from our district’s perspective it’s a good plan in that it makes issues around growth a priority. The plan calls for growth that is in the right places, with the necessary infrastructure and with business growth occurring in existing commercial and employment areas. Where I start to worry is when I look at the Board’s operational budget for the 2015-16 year which is a mere $16.9 million, and $6.3 million capital expenditure. It’s hard to see what can be achieved with what is a relatively paltry amount. The draft plan is full of words like “champion”, “cater for”, “recognise and embrace,” “support”, “celebrate and encourage”. These are all words that express the right sentiments without having the actual ability to SPEND anything. Meanwhile, the Pohutukawa Coast Community Associa-

Speed limit around horses Just wondering how many people are aware of the 20kph speed limit past horses. As an old horse rider now with children and grandchildren all riding I was not aware of this myself. There needs to be more publicity and road signs to make drivers aware of this 20kph limit and also the distance required for passing if they are on the road. Not every horse is road/traffic smart as they all have to gain experience. Also perhaps regos should be taken and reported so they can receive warning notices from the police/ council. Our families and horses lives are at risk. Where has common sense gone!! GLENDA FARMAN

tion is gearing up for another AGM where, once again, it will battle to get enough people to stand for committee positions and keep the association functioning. Over the next couple of weeks we will canvass a few opinions in the pages of the PC Times on the future of our district. Hopefully this will stimulate a bit of discussion and perhaps get people along to the AGM who may be willing to pitch in and help make stuff happen. This year’s agm is an ideal opportunity for the PCCA to re-direct its focus and perhaps take on a broader perspective. In recent years it has been preoccupied with specific development proposals – the marina, Jack Lachlan Drive, Countdown etc – and rightly so. But for the first time in a while there is now the opportunity to take a step back and get ready for the next phase _ the Area Plan which will look at the specifics of future growth in this district.

(Mis) use of our money It is exceedingly difficult to understand the funding decisions of our Council, who are (mis-) using our money. Most residents could make a list of projects that require funds – Maraetai Wharf and the erosion at Maraetai Beach, the arts, the potholes in Third View Avenue (between Shelly Bay and Bell Roads – the road was fine till council contractors “fixed” it.) etc. However we are now informed that they are spending $12,000 on a hardly-used toilet facility at the Beachlands library! It is really unfathomable. Possibly reducing a few council “fat-cats’” salaries would help. Meanwhile, The horses can drop their manure on my road/berm/ pavement anytime – it’s good for my garden! Connecting Coast to rest of world Access to quality broadband services has been a common theme raised by Pohutukawa Coast and Clevedon district residents and businesses with Andrew Bayly, the National Party candidate for the Hunua Electorate. “Demand is only going to increase as the Hunua Electorate grows and high speed access to the internet will be a key enabler of that growth, rather than a luxury”, says Andrew. “The key to achieving this is the Government’s $1.65 billion investment that will deliver faster broadband to where 97.8 per cent of all New Zealanders live, work, play, and study by 2025,” says Andrew. He has recently spoken with the network providers and can report that Clevedon, Whitford, Beachlands and Maraetai areas residents and businesses can expect improved DSL (cable-delivered) solutions within the next two years. “As Chorus deploys further infrastructure, some areas that currently have no service will finally be able to connect to broadband and others will be provided with a faster service”, say Andrew. “Residents of the

For sale: big, fit Brookby blokes

This handsome, fit group of blokes are up for sale! These guys are handy around the house, garden and farm, and are offering labour to the local community (Brookby, Clevedon, Whitford, Alfriston, Maraetai and Beachlands) at below market rates as a fundraiser for the Brookby Environment Protection Society (BEPS). They can undertake jobs such as section clearing, fence building, window painting, small building projects etc. The client’s job will be quoted and the labour content of the job will be donated directly to the BEPS bank account. All funds raised will help BEPS’ fight in the Environment Court in November against proposed applications by Pascoes for a cleanfill on Twilight Road in Brookby, and Brookby Quarries Ltd which has applied for a large increase in the scale of their op-

erations. Saturday operations are sought by both businesses. The BEPS objective is to protect Brookby, Whitford, Clevedon and Alfriston from the adverse effects of these applications, including traffic congestion and road safety, increased noise and environmental effects. All money raised will help BEPS to pay for experts and lawyers who will represent the community in the Environment Court. BEPS has been granted funding from the Ministry of the Environment, and have also received financial support from the Whitford Ratepayers Association to help with these costs, but needs to raise more. If you or someone you know could be interested in hiring this group of blokes, please contact Craig on 0274 368 224 so he can arrange to view and quote your project. All payments can be

Wharf to be strenghened, seawall to be ‘reviewed’

Repairs to Maraetai Wharf will begin in mid-August, says an Auckland Council spokesperson. The repairs will be like-for-like, meaning that the design will be the same but will include strengthened timbers. Meanwhile, Auckland Council staff have met with environmental and engineering experts who will review the issues relating to the failing seawall and erosion along the beachfront foreshore, and will then provide recommendations. “Once these have been received we’ll be able to discuss the potential options and associated costs,” says the council spokesperson. The effectiveness of the existing seawall structure will form part of the options/recommendations. A number of options to reduce erosion will be considered as part of the review. This will include the potential extension of the existing “experimental” planting at the eastern end of

the beach, and structural backstop protection. The long term strategy for erosion prevention along the Beachlands to Orere Pt coastline includes shoreline inspections undertaken annually as well as following storms. “This work is part of an ongoing strategy to identify risk areas and to assist with coastal erosion management along the Beachlands to Orere Point coastline,” says the spokesperson.

FEATURE PROPERTY: August 1, 2014

Beachlands - Expressions of Interest There’s a touch of mystery when you pass through the steel gates and arrive at the front door of this property on the best street in Beachlands. (I have to say that as I live in the same street!). Step onto the small wooden front landing and there’s no hint at all of what’s to come. You can’t see the back garden and the entrance leads to two hallways, one running at right angles, the other straight ahead. The one to the right leads to an internal access garage that also contains shower and utility area. There’s also hallway access to a bathroom with stained wood vanity bench and a good ole’ fashioned ventilated airing cupboard. In fact, a big feature throughout the house is that everything is exactly where it needs to be – storage cupboards, blinds, burglar alarm, curtains, dishwasher, drapes, extractor fan, garage door opener, light fittings, heated towel rail, jackpoints and so on. The hallway to the front leads into an open plan kitchen, again with the wood bench tops, along with a big six hob gas stove and stainless steel oven. There are two pantries with bifold doors and a rangehood. A bay window allows you to see what’s going on in Ealing Cres while preparing the dinner. But that’s not what grabs the attention. As soon as you step into the kitchen your gaze is drawn immediately to the sundrenched living area and beyond it the previously unseen back garden with its lavender (English and French) and multitude of fruit trees – figs, lemons, apples, peaches. There are established gardens around the perimeter with some spectacular rose bushes.

Then there’s the view – across Sunkist Bay clifftop reserve to Rangitoto, Browns Island and the city. It’s like having your own private park. Also at the bottom of the garden is an artist’s studio with a rustic feel and natural wood scent. Plenty of natural light makes it ideal for painting. Or, if you are not artistic, perhaps it could be a work-from-home office, massage studio, sleepout or man cave. But back to the house. Wooden decks allow plenty of room for entertaining or just relaxing and enjoying the garden. The decks can be accessed from the living area and both bedrooms. The main bedroom enjoys the most direct access to the extended deck area where you can enjoy a morning cuppa before facing the day. Wardrobes with colonial-style doors run the length of one wall. On the opposite side of the living area, two steps lead down into the second bedroom with its tiled floor and sloping beamed roof giving it a guest-room feel. The property was given a major facelift about 10 years ago and clearly a lot of thought was put into the design. The result is a rustic seaside home full of character but with maintenancefree color steel roof, aluminium jojnery and a lovely seasoned cedar plank exterior. It’s a home that is full of charm and completely in keeping with the best street in Beachlands. Yes, I know, I’m biased! ~ Duncan Pardon

Dr Paul Hutchison We want to create a better future for Franklin. Our Franklin draft Local Board Plan details plans to improve the lives of our community over the next three years, such as: • planning for growth to ensure it happens at the right place, at the right time • working to prioritise the importance, frequency and accessibility of public transport and ensuring our roads are safe • developing a Greenways Plan to connect parks, forests and waterways with pathways for walking, cycling and horse riding. These are just three of the initiatives we are proposing. Read the full plan online at shapeauckland.co.nz Hard copies are available from selected libraries and service centres. He is also keen to see discussion on the potential for tourism in the district and the need for a motel. Another committee member, Jo Baddeley, says one of the purposes of the PCCA’s community survey is to help ascertain just what the area’s constituency is. “Our constituency has changed. There are now a lot of new people living out here and we need to be also representing them, rather than clinging on to old ideology that may not be relevant anymore,” says Jo. There is still time to complete the PCCA survey which can be found on the association’s website, www.pcca.org.nz. There are questions about our beach lifestyle, growth, residential block sizes, water supply, marine dredging, commercial fishing/ shellfish dredging, road widths, Motukuraka Island (Flat Island), police numbers, retirement village, local halls and much more. Meanwhile, over the next two weeks in the lead up to the agm, the PC Times will be running comments from invited contributors that will canvass several local issues. NEXT WEEK: Connections – views on roading links between Spinnaker Bay and Beachlands, Pine Harbour and Beachlands, and the need for improvements to the main road.
